Artist's Statement

"Art is visual music..."

I create my work as a composer of music might. I usually tone the canvas or paper warm yellows and allow shadows and lights to emerge. I then begin to play with those, darkening or lightening them and adding more color. Each stroke leads to the next, and as the work progresses and the dialog between me and the painting grows, additions and changes occur creating the composition. Even though the final compositions appear geometric, these evolve from within and are not planned.

Much of my recent and current work is abstract although I also work some with landscape. Recently I have begun some combinations of the abstract with minimal landscape imagery. And I have also revived my interest in horse imagery and am doing some paintings featuring the horse.

Virginia Wood grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and majored in art at the University of South Carolina. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City for a few years in the early 1960’s, becoming interested in abstraction as well as various styles of realism.

She married in 1962, and moved to Peoria IL, where she and her husband had a child. While living there, she continued to study, paint and show when time and opportunity allowed. In 1968 she went to live in the San Francisco Bay area, followed by moving to Boulder CO in 1975. She has continued to develop and show her work in the Boulder/Denver area since then, and has been represented by a number of galleries and art consultants in this area. In 1995 Progressive Fine Art, an international artists’ representative in Toronto, Canada began to represent her.

She works out of a large group studio in Boulder where the artists, though independent, support and share ideas with each other, as well as occasionally putting on studio events open to the public.

Her work is included in many corporate and private collections. She has done some teaching, and gives private workshops in her studio. She has also participated in a number of local art events in and around the Boulder/Denver area.
